Shopify Developer in the UK

UK Shopify work has been dominated since Brexit by the practicalities of selling across borders — VAT thresholds, EU IOSS registration, duties shown at checkout rather than sprung on the customer at delivery, and shipping rules that differ for Northern Ireland. Getting those wrong produces refused parcels and refund requests rather than an error message. I set Shopify Markets up properly and build the theme work around a checkout that tells the truth about landed cost.

Shopify themes and apps

Shopify Developer — what that actually means

Most Shopify stores that come to me do not need to be rebuilt. They need three or four specific things fixed, and the reason they have not been is that the store is running fifteen apps and nobody knows which ones matter any more.

App accumulation is the defining Shopify problem. Each app injects scripts, each script costs load time, and the cumulative effect on a mid-range phone over mobile data is a product page that takes long enough to lose a meaningful share of paid traffic before it renders. The first thing I do on an existing store is audit what is installed against what is actually used, because removing four apps often produces a bigger conversion gain than a redesign would.

Beyond that, the work splits between theme development — custom sections your marketing team can rearrange without breaking the layout, done in Liquid or Hydrogen — and the commercial configuration that determines whether the store works in your market at all: payment methods, market and currency setup, shipping rules, tax, and subscription or bundle logic that behaves correctly at the edges.

Scope

What is included

What Shopify development covers for a UK client.

Custom theme development

Built from your design in Liquid, with flexible sections your team can rearrange in the theme editor without producing something broken.

Theme customisation and fixes

Targeted work on an existing theme — product page changes, cart drawer, filtering, bundles — without a full rebuild.

App audit and removal

Identifying what each installed app costs in load time and monthly fee, and replacing the ones that can be done in the theme for nothing.

Shopify Markets and currency

Multi-market setup with correct currency presentment, regional payment methods, tax and shipping rules per destination.

Headless with Hydrogen

React storefronts on Shopify's headless stack, where the interface genuinely justifies leaving the standard theme model.

Speed and conversion work

Image handling, script deferral, lazy loading and layout stability — measured on a mid-range phone, not on your laptop.

Deliverables

What you actually receive

  • Custom sections documented so your team knows what each one does
  • App audit with monthly cost and load-time impact per app
  • Mobile performance measured before and after, on real devices
  • Payment and shipping tested with live transactions before launch
  • Theme kept in Git, not edited directly in the admin
  • Handover session covering the theme editor and product setup

How it runs

From first call to handover

Four stages, with something visible on a staging URL from early on rather than a reveal at the end.

1

Audit the store

Apps, theme customisations, speed on mobile and where the funnel actually loses people. Findings in writing before any work is proposed.

2

Fix the expensive things first

Usually app bloat and product page speed, because they affect every visitor rather than a subset.

3

Theme work

Custom sections and design changes, built in Git on a development theme rather than edited live.

4

Market configuration

Payments, currencies, tax and shipping verified with real transactions before the store goes live in a new market.

Why it works for UK

Three things that decide whether this arrangement suits you

Your repository, your hosting, your domain

Everything is committed to your GitHub and deployed to your own hosting — UK or EU region if data residency matters to you. No lock-in, no licence, no dependency on me continuing to exist.

UK and EU hosting where it matters

For clients who need personal data to stay in the UK or EEA, I deploy to London or Dublin regions on AWS, or to UK hosts, and keep backups in the same jurisdiction.

One developer you can actually reach

No account manager, no ticket queue, no rotating team. The person who scoped the work builds it and answers the phone about it two years later.

FAQ

Shopify Developer in UK — common questions

What British businesses ask before committing to a project.

Can you customise a theme I already bought?
Yes, and it is frequently the sensible route. A well-built purchased theme plus targeted customisation costs a fraction of a custom build and gets you to the same place for most stores. I will tell you when the theme is genuinely holding you back — usually when it is unmaintained or so heavily modified that every update overwrites work.
How do I know which Shopify apps to remove?
By measuring rather than guessing. The audit lists every app with its monthly cost and its measured impact on page load, alongside whether its function could be done in the theme for nothing. Stores typically find three or four apps that are being paid for, slowing the site down, and duplicating something the theme already does.
Should I go headless with Hydrogen?
Usually not. Headless adds real complexity — you take on hosting, caching and a build pipeline — and the performance gain over a well-built Liquid theme is smaller than it is often sold as. It earns its keep when you need an interface Shopify's theme model genuinely cannot express, or when the storefront is one part of a larger application.
Can you set up Shopify for selling in multiple countries?
Yes. Shopify Markets handles currency presentment, market-specific pricing, local payment methods, and tax and duty rules per destination. The part that needs care is duties and landed cost: customers who are surprised by a charge on delivery refuse the parcel, which costs more than the order was worth. That gets configured and tested rather than assumed.
How much does Shopify development cost for a UK business?
There is no published rate, because a number without a scope is meaningless — two British companies asking for the same thing can need very different amounts of work. What you get is a short call and then a fixed written quote in GBP, usually within two working days. Quoted and invoiced in GBP. Payment by bank transfer or Wise, typically in three milestones — deposit, mid-project sign-off, and balance on launch. Invoices carry the detail your accountant expects, and there is no VAT charged on services supplied from India. Working directly with the developer means the price is not carrying an office, an account manager or a sales commission, which is most of the difference against a local agency quote.
What are your working hours for UK clients?
A 4.5 to 5.5 hour offset means my full working day overlaps yours — 9:00 am in London is early afternoon here, and a same-day answer is the norm rather than the exception. For Shopify development that matters most during review cycles, when a blocked question can otherwise cost you a day. The staging URL is always current, so you can check progress whenever it suits you rather than waiting for a call.
Are you GDPR compliant for UK clients?
The site or system I build for you is. That means consent captured before any non-essential cookie or tag fires, a reject option as easy to use as accept, forms that collect only what you actually need, and a written record of what data is stored and which third parties process it. Where data residency matters, I deploy to UK or EEA hosting. Your privacy notice itself should still be reviewed by someone qualified — I give you the accurate technical detail it needs to describe.
