Edinburgh punches considerably above its size in two areas: financial services, where several large institutions and a great many boutique firms are headquartered, and technology, where the university pipeline sustains a startup scene denser than the city's population would suggest. Financial clients bring compliance requirements and slow, careful procurement; tech clients bring the opposite, and I work with both.

The festival period compresses an enormous amount of commercial activity into a few weeks, which means booking systems, ticketing and accommodation sites face load patterns that a steady-traffic business never encounters. Building for that means designing for the peak rather than the average, and — more practically — making sure the work is finished well before the season rather than during it, because there is no room to fix things in August.
