Why Your Website Isn't Ranking on Google: 13 Real Reasons

In ten years of audits, the reason has almost never been exotic. It is usually one of these, and usually fixable in a fortnight.

The short version

  • Check indexing first. A page Google has not indexed cannot rank, and this is the problem more often than anything else.
  • Most small businesses fail by targeting keywords far above their weight. Rank for the searches you can actually win first.
  • Thin pages of 200 words cannot compete with 1,500-word pages that answer the question properly.
  • For local businesses, an optimised Google Business Profile beats almost any on-site change for enquiry volume.

First, check whether Google has your site at all

Search site:yourdomain.com in Google. That lists every page Google has indexed from your domain.

  • No results at all: the site is not indexed. Reasons 1–4 below.
  • Far fewer pages than you have: partial indexing. Reasons 3, 5 and 8.
  • All pages listed but no traffic: you are indexed and losing on relevance or authority. Reasons 6 onwards.

That one search saves weeks of guessing.

1. The site is blocking search engines

The most common cause of a brand-new site never appearing, and the most embarrassing. During development, sites are deliberately hidden. Sometimes nobody unhides them.

Check: open yourdomain.com/robots.txt. If you see Disallow: / your entire site is blocked. In WordPress, check Settings → Reading for "Discourage search engines from indexing this site". Also view the page source and search for noindex.

2. Google does not know the site exists

New domains are not discovered automatically or instantly. Without any links pointing at you, Google may take weeks to find you at all.

Fix: create a Google Search Console property, verify it, submit your XML sitemap, and use the URL Inspection tool to request indexing on your key pages. This is free and takes twenty minutes.

3. The site is too new

A three-week-old domain with no links is not going to outrank a competitor who has been publishing since 2018. Rankings for anything competitive take months, not days.

Realistic expectation: long-tail and local terms in 1–3 months. Moderately competitive terms in 4–8 months. "Website designer in India" — years, and possibly never, which is precisely why targeting it is a mistake.

4. Technical errors are blocking crawling

Broken canonical tags pointing at the wrong page, redirect chains, server errors, or a JavaScript-rendered site where the content never appears in the raw HTML.

Check: Search Console → Pages report. It lists exactly which URLs are excluded and why. It is the most under-used free diagnostic tool available to a business owner.

5. You are targeting keywords you cannot win

The single biggest strategic error I see. A new Udaipur studio targets "web design company India" — a term owned by companies with thousands of backlinks — and concludes SEO does not work.

Fix: go long-tail and local first. "Website designer in Udaipur", "hotel management software for resorts in Rajasthan", "GST billing software for a distributor". Lower volume, dramatically higher conversion, and reachable. Win those, build authority, then climb.

6. The content is too thin to compete

A 200-word service page cannot outrank a 1,500-word page that actually answers the question, covers related questions and demonstrates expertise. Google is comparing you with what already ranks, not with an absolute standard.

Check: search your target keyword, open the top three results, and count the words and the sub-questions they cover. That is the bar.

7. Every page is targeting the same keyword

If your home page, services page and three sub-pages all optimise for "software development company", they compete with each other and Google picks one — often the wrong one.

Fix: one primary keyword per page, mapped in a spreadsheet before writing anything. This alone rescues a lot of sites.

8. The site is too slow, especially on mobile

Google's Core Web Vitals thresholds are public and specific: Largest Contentful Paint under 2.5 seconds, Interaction to Next Paint under 200 milliseconds, Cumulative Layout Shift under 0.1. Beyond ranking, speed decides whether an Indian mobile visitor waits at all.

Check: PageSpeed Insights, and look at the field data rather than the lab score. Test on 4G, not office wifi.

Links remain a primary signal of whether anyone else considers you credible. A site with zero external links is asking Google to take its word for it.

Fix, in order of realism for an Indian SME: local business directories with consistent name, address and phone; your industry association; suppliers and clients who list partners; local press for anything genuinely newsworthy; and content good enough that people cite it. Buying links from a Fiverr seller is a good way to acquire a penalty.

10. Your Google Business Profile is neglected

For any local business this is the highest-return item on the list, and it is free. The map pack sits above the organic results and takes a large share of local clicks.

Fix: claim the profile, choose precise categories, add real photographs, list services, keep hours accurate, post occasionally, and ask satisfied customers for reviews. Consistent NAP across the web supports it. This is the core of local SEO, and for many businesses it produces more enquiries than the website itself.

11. Titles and descriptions are unhelpful

"Home", "Services", "Untitled" — or the same title on every page. Titles are a direct ranking input and the thing a searcher reads before deciding whether to click.

Fix: unique titles under about 60 characters, leading with the keyword and including the city where relevant. Descriptions under about 158 characters written to earn the click rather than to please a checklist.

12. Duplicate content across pages or domains

City pages that are identical except for the city name. Product descriptions copied from the manufacturer. The same site live on www and non-www, or on both HTTP and HTTPS, without a canonical.

Fix: genuinely different content per page — local specifics, different examples, different questions answered. Enforce one canonical version of every URL.

13. There is no ongoing activity

SEO is not a launch task. Competitors publish, earn links and refresh content. A site untouched for two years drifts down regardless of how well it was built.

Fix: a realistic publishing rhythm. One genuinely useful article a month beats four thin ones, and beats forty AI-generated pages that Google will treat as what they are.

What to fix first

PriorityFixEffortTypical time to effect
1Unblock indexing, submit sitemap30 minutesDays
2Google Business Profile (local businesses)2 hours1–3 weeks
3Unique titles and descriptionsHalf a day2–6 weeks
4Re-target achievable keywords1 day planning1–3 months
5Expand thin pages on key services1 week1–3 months
6Site speed and Core Web Vitals2–5 days1–2 months
7Local citations and linksOngoing2–6 months
8Monthly contentOngoing3–12 months

Work down that list in order. Items one to three cost almost nothing and are where most stalled sites are actually stuck.

If someone offers to fix your rankings without first looking at Search Console, they are selling a package rather than diagnosing a problem. Ask what they found before you ask what they charge.

Getting a real diagnosis

A technical SEO audit works through all thirteen against your actual site and returns a prioritised list with effort and expected impact against each item. If you would rather try it yourself first, work the table above from the top — you will resolve most of it without paying anyone.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

The follow-up questions this guide usually produces.

Why is my website not showing up on Google?
Search site:yourdomain.com in Google first. If nothing appears, the site is not indexed — usually because robots.txt blocks crawlers, a noindex tag is still in place from development, or Google has not discovered the site. Verify the domain in Google Search Console, submit an XML sitemap and request indexing on key pages.
How long does it take for a new website to rank on Google?
Indexing takes days to a few weeks. Ranking for long-tail and local keywords typically takes one to three months. Moderately competitive terms take four to eight months. Highly competitive national keywords take years and often are not a sensible target for a small business at all.
Why is my website indexed but getting no traffic?
Usually because you are targeting keywords beyond your site's current authority, or because the pages are too thin to compete with what already ranks. Check what the top three results for your keyword actually cover, then either match that depth or move to more achievable long-tail and local terms.
Does site speed affect Google rankings?
Yes. Core Web Vitals are a confirmed ranking factor, with published thresholds: LCP under 2.5 seconds, INP under 200 milliseconds and CLS under 0.1. Speed matters more for conversions than rankings, though — a slow site loses mobile visitors before Google's opinion becomes relevant.
Do I need backlinks to rank in India?
For competitive terms, yes. For local and long-tail terms, an optimised Google Business Profile, consistent local citations and genuinely useful content often suffice. Avoid bought links from marketplaces — they are the most reliable way to acquire a penalty that takes months to recover from.
What is the fastest way to get more leads from my website?
For a local business, an optimised and actively maintained Google Business Profile usually produces enquiries faster than any on-site change. Alongside it, fix titles and descriptions, make sure enquiry forms actually deliver mail, and add a click-to-call and WhatsApp button visible on mobile.
