American DTC brands rarely need a new Shopify theme. They need the one they have to convert better and stop leaking money at checkout — subscription and bundling logic that behaves, a product page fast enough on mobile to survive paid traffic, apps audited and removed where they only add script weight, and Shopify Markets or a 3PL integration wired correctly. I work in Liquid and Hydrogen, and I will tell you when an app is the better answer than custom code.
Shopify Developer — what that actually means
Most Shopify stores that come to me do not need to be rebuilt. They need three or four specific things fixed, and the reason they have not been is that the store is running fifteen apps and nobody knows which ones matter any more.
App accumulation is the defining Shopify problem. Each app injects scripts, each script costs load time, and the cumulative effect on a mid-range phone over mobile data is a product page that takes long enough to lose a meaningful share of paid traffic before it renders. The first thing I do on an existing store is audit what is installed against what is actually used, because removing four apps often produces a bigger conversion gain than a redesign would.
Beyond that, the work splits between theme development — custom sections your marketing team can rearrange without breaking the layout, done in Liquid or Hydrogen — and the commercial configuration that determines whether the store works in your market at all: payment methods, market and currency setup, shipping rules, tax, and subscription or bundle logic that behaves correctly at the edges.
What is included
What Shopify development covers for a US client.
Custom theme development
Built from your design in Liquid, with flexible sections your team can rearrange in the theme editor without producing something broken.
Theme customisation and fixes
Targeted work on an existing theme — product page changes, cart drawer, filtering, bundles — without a full rebuild.
App audit and removal
Identifying what each installed app costs in load time and monthly fee, and replacing the ones that can be done in the theme for nothing.
Shopify Markets and currency
Multi-market setup with correct currency presentment, regional payment methods, tax and shipping rules per destination.
Headless with Hydrogen
React storefronts on Shopify's headless stack, where the interface genuinely justifies leaving the standard theme model.
Speed and conversion work
Image handling, script deferral, lazy loading and layout stability — measured on a mid-range phone, not on your laptop.
What you actually receive
- Custom sections documented so your team knows what each one does
- App audit with monthly cost and load-time impact per app
- Mobile performance measured before and after, on real devices
- Payment and shipping tested with live transactions before launch
- Theme kept in Git, not edited directly in the admin
- Handover session covering the theme editor and product setup
Built with
Nothing proprietary, nothing niche enough that your next developer cannot pick it up.

From first call to handover
Four stages, with something visible on a staging URL from early on rather than a reveal at the end.
Audit the store
Apps, theme customisations, speed on mobile and where the funnel actually loses people. Findings in writing before any work is proposed.
Fix the expensive things first
Usually app bloat and product page speed, because they affect every visitor rather than a subset.
Theme work
Custom sections and design changes, built in Git on a development theme rather than edited live.
Market configuration
Payments, currencies, tax and shipping verified with real transactions before the store goes live in a new market.
Three things that decide whether this arrangement suits you
A stack your next hire already knows
Laravel, React, Next.js, Node, WordPress and Shopify on AWS, Vercel or Cloudflare. A future in-house developer will recognise everything and be productive on day one.
Real overlap, not a next-day reply
I work evenings IST specifically so there are five or more live hours with Eastern time. A 9 am call your time is routine, and work you approve at 5 pm Pacific is generally done before you open your laptop.
ADA and WCAG 2.1 AA built in
Semantic markup, keyboard operability, visible focus, colour contrast and labelled forms are part of the build rather than a plugin bolted on later. Accessibility overlay widgets do not protect you and I will not sell you one.
